UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES. Gaul. Ca. early 5th century AD, time of Theodosius II (AD 402-450). AR siliqua (18mm, 1h). ANACS VF 20. Contemporary (Visigothic?) imitation of a siliqua of Theodosius II from Constantinople, ca. AD 430-438. D N THD(retrograde) O-SIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / VOT / MVLT / XXXX, in four lines within wreath; CONS in exergue. For prototype, cf. RIC X 385. Note: the holder labels this coin as an imitation of a siliqua of Theodosius I, but this is impossible as the MULT XXXX suggests a reign of over 30 years, and Theodosius I only ruled for 16. Therefore, the prototype must be an issue of Theodosius II, who ruled for 48 years. Rare and quite an interesting piece.
