Republic 8 Reales 1878 Cn-JD MS64 NGC, Culiacan mint, KM377.3, DP-Cn37. D over retrograde D variety. A whimsical variety where the die-sinker punched the D backwards and then corrected it with an overpunch. According to the Resplandores authors, this scarce variety is rarely found better than extremely fine. To add to the piece's fascinating history, it also has a date sub-variety where a die-chip resulted in a sort of punctuation between the 7 and the 8 (187.8). Showing near-gem quality with satin blooming surfaces and detailed motifs, it stands as the sole finest graded by NGC.
