Description

British Colony. Victoria bronzed-copper Specimen Unadopted "First Opium War" Military Decoration 1842 SP64 PCGS, Fonrobert-Unl., Eimer-Unl., BHM-Unl., cf. Barac-72 (in silver). Dated variety. 36mm. By William Wyon. An important Medal of famed engraver William Wyon commemorating the Treaty of Nanking, effectively ending the First Opium War and establishing Hong Kong as a British colony. While Wyon's first rendition of the medal was highly evocative, depicting a lion standing atop a dragon, it was ultimately rejected for the more sensitively rendered motif seen here. Commendable so choice, on the very cusp of a gem designation, complimented by glossy chestnut surfaces and an exacting medallic strike. Certain to be of interest to the advanced specialist in military Medals and decorations of China and Great Britain.
