Republic Yuan Shih-kai Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS65 S NGC, KM-Y329, L&M-63, Kann-645, WS-174-1. Yuan not connected variety. An absolutely gorgeous coin to behold, and among the freshest examples of this typically ubiquitous and unremarkable type we have handled. While NGC's census generally reveals a lack of Prooflike-designated Dollars of this year (only 2 to date), with fully Proof designations typically reserved for L. Giorgi Pattern strikings, a comparison with the PL-graded specimens at PCGS reveals a number of close characteristics--deep, pondlike surface reflectivity, sharply cut and subtly frosty devices, and a general dominance of fine, parallel die polish lines in the open fields. Indeed, it is hardly difficult to see why the service chose to award this coin with a "star" designation, as its visual caliber truly surpasses even numerically finer representatives. Hands down one of the most aesthetically pleasing examples the cataloger has seen, and a coin which begs to be examined in hand.
