Description

Kuang-hsü Pattern Dollar CD 1907 MS61 NGC, Tientsin mint, L&M-20, Kann-212, Chang-CH23, WS-0025, Wenchao-89 (rarity 2 stars), Chang Foundation-31. A highly pleasing relic from one of China's many attempts to create unity out of the diverse series of coinage and weight standards circulating throughout the country. Following on the heels of the Tai Ching Ti Kuo Tael Patterns of the previous year, this new, slightly altered design clearly indicated how entrenched a Dollar standard had become in China; the new coins were minted in four denominations from the 10 Cents to the Dollar, only the last of which carried this special wave-like design on the obverse (reverse as holdered). Though never introduced into circulation, few of these coins were carefully kept, with a very large number suffering from cleaning. This piece has pleasingly survived the ravages of time remarkably well, its surfaces radiant and slightly glassy, showing golden luster over argent fields. The presence of die polish and only a few slight marks on the obverse (reverse as holdered) suggest that a slightly higher grade might be achievable in a more modern holder.
