Description

João V silver Restrike Dobra of 64 Escudos (92800 Reis) 1731-Dated UNC (Cleaned), cf. Teixeira de Aragão-23, Gomes-R06.01. 56mm. 139.80gm. Plain Edge. An intriguing restrike example of an early João V large type, presenting Proof surfaces occupied by frosty devices and reflective fields, with a few hairlines. Teixeira de Aragão, in his 1880 Moedas Cunhadas em Nome dos Reis cataloged a Pattern Dobra of 24 Escudos in gold, stating that he had only seen a single authentic example, part of the "Royal collection." In Moedas Portuguesas, Alberto Gomes explained that Proof restrikes of the Dobra of 24, 32 and 64 Escudos exist, struck in the second part of the XIX century, alongside unofficial (in his words "clandestine") restrikes made in the early XX century. According to Gomes, the official pieces have ornate edges, while the clandestine "usually" come with plain edges. The diameter of the example offered matches the Dobra of 64 Escudos described by Gomes in gold, where he wrote: "The restrike was ordered by King D. Luis I in 1863, for the Prince D. Carlos' birth. Other than the two examples ordered and delivered to the king, today located in the National Ajuda Palace and in the Montepio/Lusitania Seguros Collection, the mint house struck a single additional specimen for their museum, which is currently poorly cataloged." These three examples are in gold, weighing 229.50gm and presenting ornate edges. This piece comes with two old envelopes, relating it to the 1880 Aragão reference 23, and also two different editions of the Catálogo Numismático by Antonio Lopes dos Santos, the 1947 second edition plating the exact example offered here.
