Republic Mint Error - Struck With Two Obverse Dies Bolivar ND (2018) MS65 NGC, Maracay mint, cf. KM-Y93 (for standard type, only dated through 2012), OAV-1BF-A.3 (same). More likely a Pattern or Essai type than a mint error, intended as a proposed design for the new monetary system announced on March 22, 2018, which aimed to establish the Bolivar Soberano as a replacement for the Bolivar Fuerte. The latter suffered from serious inflation, leading to the hasty production of trials for the new monetary system. While it is uncertain how many such pieces were originally produced, Numisubastas of Caracas recently offered a double-reverse trial of the same issue in December (lot 8998), which they recorded had a likely mintage of just 20 pieces.
