Philip V gold Cob Escudo 1742/1 L-V AU55 NGC, Lima mint, cf. KM35 (overdate unlisted), Cal-1699 (same), Grunthal/Sellschopp-148b = Oro Macuquino-153 (same). 3.34gm. By all indications an exceptionally rare, and relatively late date for the type, with the Standard Catalog recording that only 767 pieces were struck in this year. Altogether missing from the Sellschopp, Norweb, and Eliasberg collections, we have been unable to locate another example of the 1742 Escudo coming to auction in recent memory, this piece indeed representing the sole certified representative. Additionally presenting a seemingly undocumented overdate, and of the utmost interest.
