Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1861 Mo-FH AU53 NGC, Mexico City mint, cf. KM378.5 (assayer given as CH/FH), Long-pg. 102. An intriguing type, carrying the FH initials of the emissions of the previous year, rather than the CH initials proper to the date. Though an CH/FH assayer is well-recognized for the date, scholars have longer debated whether or not the present issue represents a series rarity or a contemporary counterfeit, as it was clearly produced from different dies to the overassayer pieces. We have been able to locate one other example from these dies in recent auction records, sold in Stack's Bowers October 2018 Collector's Choice sale (lot 72604). Ex. Mexico Maxico Collection (Stack's January 2010, Lot 1367)
