Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1840 Mo-ML MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM378.5, Long-pg. 82 (Extremely Rare). A piece preserved in absolutely beautiful quality for any minor of the era, and one which Long suggests to be Extremely Rare in BU preservation, a fact verified by the presence of one other in this peak grade at NGC. Suggested to be a contemporary counterfeit in the Eliasberg sale, this seems quite likely, given the coin's unusual and cramped die style. If anything, however, this makes the offering's survivorship so fine all the more remarkable, with the Pittman specimen (the only other of this mint-date we have offered) an MS62 by comparison. Ex. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities April 2005, Lot 3280); Thomas W. Voetter Collection (B. Max Mehl January 1943, Lot 111) [part]
