Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1725-H AU Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, La Rochelle mint, cf. KM470.8 (only listed for grandes palmes), Gad-Unl., Dup-1638A (for type), L4L-465 (R4). Short palms variety. An exquisite rarity within this series, with the Short Palms (palmes courtes) variety only recorded for the emissions of 1723 by both Gadoury and the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Assigned an R4 rarity by Deswelle, Fabre, and Wattier in their Les Monnaies des quatre Rois Louis as one of only three mints that used this reverse in 1725 (along with Caen and Bordeaux), we have been able to locate just a single 1725 Mirliton de palmes courtes in auction archives of the last two decades, from Paris. Altogether missing from the Ford and Partrick Collections, and certainly of the utmost scarcity and interest to French Colonial collectors.
