Description

Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-Q AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Perpignan mint, KM470.16, Gad-339 (R2), Dup-1638, L4L-466 (R3). Large palms variety. A notorious rarity that lays claim to a veritable list of "firsts," both within the series, and for the auction record--the first and only year that Perpignan produced the grandes palmes design, the first example of a Perpignan-minted Mirliton we have presented, and, apparently, the first appearance of an example at auction since the sale of the Ford Collection in 2006. Struck from lavishly polished dies, though deemed as almost uncirculated by NGC, it is difficult to discern any legitimate circulation wear over the devices. Certainly a "star" within this exciting collection, and one that will afford many collectors the opportunity to fill a long-time hole in their collections.
