Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton de Bearn 1723-(cow) AU53 NGC, Pau mint, KM469, Gad-338a (R5), Dup-1638A, L4L-473 (R4). Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. An elusive and popular mint, the example offered here presenting an off-center and shallow strike, bearing some excess metal to the left of Louis XV bust and some shipwreck encrustation to the pale gold surfaces. The sole certified example by the two major grading companies, with only 3 or 4 others having crossed the auction block in the last two decades according to our research. Though among the slightly more attainable Pau-minted dates in this short series, acquiring an example is by no means an easy task. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 414)
