Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-C AU58 NGC, Caen mint, KM468.4, Gad-338 (R2), Dup-1638A. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau Shipwreck. Expressing well-defined motifs and a sun-gold tone across the fields. Unusual to find without serious evidence of saltwater damage, and reportedly one of only two 1723 Caen examples recovered from the cargo of the ship in 1965. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 388)
