Description

M. Plaetorius M.f. Cestianus (ca. 67 or 57 BC). AR denarius (18mm, 3.68 gm, 4h). NGC Fine, brushed. Rome. CESTIANVS, turreted bust of Cybele right; forepart of lion at left, globe under chin / M•PLAETORIVS•AED•CVR•EX•S•C (counterclockwise), curule chair; rudder to left. Crawford 409/2. Sydenham 808. Plaetoria 3. Crawford (67 BC), Hersh/Walker (67 BC, first issue). From the Silas Collection Crawford describes the reverse type for this issue seeming to refer to the responsibility of the Curule Aediles for the Ludi Megalenses - a festival celebrated from 4-10 April in honor of Cybele where the wealthy Roman nobles hosted each other in rotation with the intent to impress, or outdo, their peers in displays of expense and extravagance. The festival also included a wild and exotic parade with dancers, and the goddess's image, with mural crown as seen on the obverse, seated within a chariot drawn by lions, all carried on a high bier.
