Milan. François I of France (1515-1547) gold Ecu d'Or au soleil (Scudo d'Oro del Sole) ND (1515-1522) AU53 NGC, Fr-340, Dup-957, MIR-260 (RR), Crippa-2. 3.36gm. (mitred head of St. Ambrose) FRANCISCVS: ∂: G: FRANCOR: REX: ∂VX: M:, sun above crowned royal French arms / (mitred head of St. Ambrose) XPS: VINCIT: XPS: REGNAT: XPS: IMPERAT (double annulet stops), cross fleury with quadrilobe at center. An highly fascinating historical type, produced after François' successful Italian campaign of 1515 to 1516, during which he expelled Massimiliano Sforza from the Duchy of Milan. Not easily locatable by any measure, we have been able to locate only a small handful having come to auction in the last several decades, the vast majority of which have showed clear evidence of bending.
