Languedoc. Jean II le Bon (1350-1364) gold Florin d'Or ND (from 1360) AU58 NGC, Montpellier or Toulouse mint, Fr-282, Ciani-346, Dup-346. 3.48gm. Emission from the 21 (in Montpellier) or 27 (Toulouse) February 1360. +FRA | NTIA, stylized lily / • S • IOHA | NNES • B •, St. John the Baptist, nimbate and mantled, standing facing, cross-tipped scepter in left hand, raising right in benediction, helmet above. A singular Florin type issued during Jean II's reign for use in Languedoc, presenting an absolutely superb visual appeal for the issue. Though struck from a slightly more appealing die pair, we would note that the Briand specimen--which brought 1500 Euros when re-offered in 2021--was only an AU Details (Damaged), and the Elias specimen was of far inferior preservation. To date the finest yet seen by NGC, with the next highest straight-graded coin at that service being an XF40 by comparison.
