Description

Philip II (1556-1598) Cob 2 Reales ND (1582-1583) Bo-AP AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Panama City mint, KM0003.2, Cay-Unl., Cal-363, Sedwick-AP4, Proctor-2R.8B (same dies). 6.51gm. Bernardino Rodríguez as assayer. Among the rarest of the Spanish colonial mints, Cobs from Panama City very seldom appear on auction, with this particular specimen not recorded in Proctor's work, The Forgotten Mint of Colonial Panama. Even at the time an ephemeral mint known for the poor quality of its coinage, most surviving specimens from Panama show highly uneven and off-center strikes, making pieces with bold central definition such as this a truly special offering.
