Maximilian copper "Large Letters" Pattern Peso 1866-Mo AU Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn103, Buttrey/Hubbard-45c var. (there, listed as small letters). A desirable issue from Maximilian's ephemeral reign, made using the same dies as the circulating silver Peso but struck in copper, quite possibly in aid of adjusting the dies prior to full production. Seldom seen, this boldly struck example displays razor-sharp devices veiled by a dark chocolate patina, and certainly survives as one of the finer known specimens of the type, with most often coming badly damaged.
