Description

Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1690-D MS66 NGC, Lyon mint, KM278.3, Gad-250 (R), L4L-243 (R1). Flan neuf variety (without star above crescent). A beautiful presentation of this conditionally elusive issue, with just a single piece certified a point finer across NGC and PCGS combined. Though noted as a slightly scarcer subvariety for the type according to Gadoury, all such minor varieties cease to be meaningful when the type is found in such standout preservation as this. Boldly lustrous across the obverse and reverse alike, hardly a mark of consequence is discernable even under magnification, all while rich flow lines are arrayed throughout the fields together with just a touch of die rust. This coin ties the Caranett example we sold in October 2020 in terms of its technical caliber, and outranks the Paramount example--which brought $10,200 in March--by 2 grade points. Ex.
