South Africa Cape of Good Hope Bank, Johannesburg 5 Pounds 4.3.1889 Pick S179 PMG Very Good 10. This impressive and extremely rare issue is the first we have encountered. It is also the first and only example graded in the PMG Population Report. A small serial number and the high denomination indicate the limited issuance of this note. A series of overprints shows the movement of this banknote in the 19th century. It apparently was to begin its life in Aliwal North, along the Orange River near present day Lesotho. However, a red cancellations and a new "Cape Town" overprint are present. Next, small red stamps in the margins, "JOHANNESBURG ISSUE" are seen. Signs of lengthy circulation and a notation are mentioned for accuracy on this uniface note. A well traveled note and unique or close to it.
