Description

Suiyuan. Republic Fen Year 38 (1949) XF45 PCGS, KM3, CCC-768, CL-MG.141, Duan-3434, Hsu (Copper)-478, HNS-1409, Shanghai Museum-1623. One of only two denominations issued by this short-lived conglomeration of 19 Mongolian and 12 Shansi districts first formed in 1913, this type virtually never becomes available in any sort of appreciable condition--the highest grade yet awarded by PCGS being an AU58. Struck from recycled brass shell casings and produced around the time of the Communist victory, a period during which Suiyuan managed to resist incorporation into Mao Zedong's unified Mongolian Autonomous Region. Only the second example we have sold, this piece appears to be one of fewer than 10 that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent decades, and is far finer than the Norman Jacobs specimen.
