Description

Sumatra. East India Company silver Specimen Pattern 3 Kepings AH 1202 (1787) SP64 PCGS, Soho mint, KM-Pn13, Prid-24, Scholten-963d (RRRR). Oblique milled edge. Normal flan variety. By all indications an extraordinarily scarce Pattern type, rated by Scholten as "of the highest rarity," and confirmed both PCGS's census and recent auction records to be one of only a very small number available to collectors. The first example we have ever handled, both sides of this piece contain a striking precision of detail to the reliefs, these set upon a dolphin-gray planchet that has taken on bold notes of champagne and turquoise tone from longtime envelope storage. Difficult to imagine meaningfully finer, and more than likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the collector of East Indies coinage. Sold with the old Baldwin's and Seaby lot tags. We would note that while this piece has been identified as stemming from the Pridmore Collection, it was not in Glendining and Baldwin's 1985 sale catalog. Ex. Mark E. Freehill Collection; Taisei-Baldwin's-Gillio Auction 19 (February 1995, Lot 341); Fred Pridmore Collection
