Description

PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285/4-246 BC). AR stater or tetradrachm (28mm, 14.14 gm, 11h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 2/5, graffito, countermark. Tyre, dated Regnal Year 8 (?) (276/5 BC). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied around neck; dotted border / ΠTOΛEMAIOY-BAΣIΛEΩΣ, eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt; H above club to left, dotted border. Svoronos 637. SNG Copenhagen 478. From the Ed's Treasures Collection This coin is listed as year 7 in Svoronos and Cohen includes it in Dated Coins of Antiquity in case additional evidence proves that the H on the reverse is indeed a date, as opposed to Lorber and Davesne who argue for it representing a control mark.
