Leo III the Isaurian (AD 717-740). AR hexagram (?) (22mm, 3.59 gm, 5h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 2/5, scuffs. Constantinople, 4th officina. o N O LЄO-N-PA MЧL, cuirassed bust of Leo III facing, with short beard, wearing plumed helmet, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / VICTORIA-AVϚЧ Δ , cross potent with base on three steps; CONOB below. Sear 1511. From the Santa Monica Collection This issue is struck from solidus dies, but with an obverse type which was not adopted for the gold, though it was used as a model for the copper (Philip Grierson, Numismatic Chronicle, 1965, p. 184).
