Description

ZEUGITANA. Carthage. Hannibal in South Italy. Ca. 215-205 BC. AR quarter-shekel (13mm, 1.76 gm, 7h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 4/5. Head of Tanit left, wreathed with grain ears, wearing pendant earring and necklace / Unbridled horse standing right. Jenkins-Lewis L2. SNG Copenhagen 339. HN Italy 2020. Ex Artemide Aste, Auction 54E (28 February 2021), lot 27 As noted by Classical Numismatic Group (Electronic Auction 460, 29 January 2020, lot 73), "in contrast to the more usual quarter shekels from this period that were minted in Carthage for use by Hannibal's forces in southern Italy (HN Italy 2015), the present specimen is from one of the more rare issues that are thought to have been struck at uncertain mints in Bruttium. This particular issue was thought by Robinson to have been struck in Lokris, but Rutter (HN Italy) doubts this attribution."
