Mughal Empire. Jahangir Rupee Ilahi Month Farwardin AH 103x (1620-1630) MS65 NGC, Surat mint, KM148.1, Hull-1518, Liddle Type S-68. Excessively challenging quality for any silver issue of the Mughal period, with most surviving rupees coming well-circulated with deposits, leading to the unfortunate consequence that many have also seen past cleaning. Indeed, to date, NGC reports only having seen 12 examples out of the 156 rupees they have certified, with spotty certification data in this series suggesting that the outlier status of the present coin could be even greater. Visually, the offering is essentially tone-free, sharply engraved calligraphy rising above finely stippled surfaces to produce a muted gem appearance.
