Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1712 L-M MS65 NGC, Lima mint, KM38.2, Cal-2120, Onza-242 (Few examples known), Oro Macuquino-242. 27.02gm. Variety with reverse (obverse as holdered) legend ending ANO 712, and the obverse legend beginning with an X at 12 o'clock. While we've handled the occasional Lima-minted Cob 8 Escudos in AU and lower MS conditions, to encounter an example certified Gem Mint State and finer is virtually unheard of. This sale includes two such coins, with an unfathomable MS66 featured in the WTR Collection. Between NGC and PCGS population reports of all Lima-minted Cob and milled 8 Escudos numbering near 2,000 examples, only 6 have achieved Gem Mint State, five in MS65 and the piece previously mentioned in MS66. The coin at hand is simply awe-inspiring, with radiant golden surfaces perfectly featuring the instantly recognizable and iconic pillars and cross, struck upon a surprisingly uniform flan laden with characteristic die polish. A specimen any treasure hunter and Cob collector would consider the crown jewel of their collection.
