Victoria gold Proof 5 Pounds 1887 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM769, S-3864, W&R-285, Marsh-F31. Mintage: 797. Reeded edge. By Joachim E. Boehm. Variety with B.P. initials on reverse. A coin whose type is as famous as the monarch whose effigy it bears, this Golden Jubilee Proof comes embellished with an instantly antique feel bolstered by pulsating watery reflectivity in the fields. Struck to a tiny figure of only 797, remarkably few survivors of the issue have been certified above this level, only around 8-10% of the population at either major grading service having been awarded gem status. Though admittedly bound in its designation by some scattered wisps over the surfaces--hardly an irregular feature for a large gold issue--evidence of post-mint imperfections virtually ends there, the rims and surfaces free of serious dings or contact marks as unbroken frost decorates the raised features.
