Franz Joseph I gold Proof "Archduke Karl Memorial" Medal 1860-Dated PR62 Ultra Cameo NGC, Hauser-2220, Horksy-3578 var. (listed in silver), Montenuovo-2690 var. (listed in bronze). 64mm. 139.78gm. By C. Radnitzky. Issued upon the inauguration of the Archduke Karl Memorial in front of the Hofburg in Vienna. A massive gold medal, struck to an impressive 40 Ducat weight, and likely intended for a prestigious attendee. Embossed with high-relief designs depicting a frosted bust of Karl and his new monument set against a highly mirrored backdrop, defining the wholly deserving "Ultra Cameo" designation. Despite the minimal scattered field marks and the occasional copper spot, this appears to be the only commemorative struck in gold offered in recent decades at major auction as we anticipate this piece to elicit fevered bidding.
