Gordian III (AD 238-244). AV aureus (21mm, 4.75 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5, brushed. Rome, AD 243-244. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right, seen from behind / VICTORIA AE-TERNA, Victory standing facing, head left, palm branch cradled in left hand, right hand resting on shield set on seated captive left at feet to left. RIC IV.III 166. Calicó 3237. Well struck and centered on bright flan. Extremely rare - only two examples in sales archives, including the present offering. From the Monaco Collection.
