Description

Republic gold 8 Escudos 1866 C-CE MS63 NGC, Culiacan mint, KM383.2, cf. Onza-1843 (only recorded as an overdate). Struck by Republican forces in opposition to Emperor Maximilian. A rule-breaker of a coin both for the series in general and this specific mint-date in particular, its stunning Choice Mint State designation propelling it to a league all its own. Though Long states that the 1866 C-CE is a "rather common coin," he admitted knowing of only a single attractive uncirculated example, with this specimen being the single-finest yet seen across either major grading service by a full two grade points. Boasting a full strike despite clear die stress, it is interesting to note that Calicó only records this year as a 1866/5 overdate, which is perhaps detectable on this piece.
