Description

Republic gold 8 Escudos 1864 C-CE MS62 NGC, Culiacan mint, KM383.2, Onza-1841, Long-pg. 351. One of the rarest dates for this assayer at the Culiacan mint, this being one of a paltry two in this top-pop status across NGC and PCGS combined and far finer than the single other example we have offered--a mere XF45--with seemingly no others having come to auction since the sale of that piece in January 2016. Missing from the Eliasberg Collection, although both Gerber and Norweb contained a specimen of the date, their pieces were merely noted as "almost extremely fine" and "good very fine" respectively, seeming to confirm Long's sentiment that only one or two brilliant uncirculated specimens were known to him in 2004. Though typical weakness is present over the hand, cap, and eagle's breast feathers, this is more than made up for by a thick sheen of die polish visible with the naked eye over both sides, situating the coin very much on the cusp of choice.
