Description

Republic Melgarejo 1865-FP MS65 NGC, Potosi mint, KM146, Elizondo-126, Asbun-Karmy-R248 (R). An elusive and popular one-year Proclamation type rarely encountered so fine, with the majority of specimens crossing the auction block circulated and mid-grade, usually accompanied by condition issues due to improper storage and the crude nature of this issue. The current offering is enveloped in a soft golden peach glow illuminated at the turn of the wrist as prominent cartwheel luster sweeps uninhibited across mark-free surfaces. This appropriately graded Gem Mint State Melgarejo displays a noble portrait of the man who bears the same name, Bolivian president and military leader Mariano Melgarejo, who is often considered to be one of the poorest Bolivian leaders of his time. Despite this fact, the Melgarejo series is still sought after, especially so in higher states of preservation which are incredibly fleeting. The offering at hand is the finest at NGC and PCGS by a wide margin, a full three grade points, and will be the catalyst for spirited bidding. Ex. R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG-St. James's Auction 29, August 2014, Lot 1223)
