Yunnan. Republic Dollar ND (1911-1922) MS64 NGC, Kunming mint, KM-Y258.1, L&M-421, Kann-169c, Chang-CH149, WS-0664. Variety with 4 circles below pearl and 4 dots in hollow of dragon's left leg. A genuinely impressive selection for this type that is almost universally encountered in lesser grades and comes plagued by striking weakness in the groups of circles to either side of the dragon. Regardless, such flaws are nowhere to be seen on the present offering, each detail--from the smallest fringes on the dragon's beard to the tiny scales on its body--rendered to precise specifications. Most recently, an MS63 of the type brought $14,000 in October 2020, suggesting this coin, exceeded by only one piece a grade point finer at NGC, will be sure to pique the interest of connoisseurs of the series. We note that two varieties exist in the placement of the dots in the hollow of the dragon's leg, one with them in a single row (seen here) and one with a row of three dots with a single dot below.
