Hupeh. Kuang-hsü "Small Characters" Tael Year 30 (1904) MS63 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y128.2, L&M-180, Kann-933, Chang-CH135, WS-0878, Wenchao-583, Chang Foundation-Unl. Small characters variety. An excellent example of superb survivorship within a series that is considered challenging in general, its Choice Mint State designation securing it a position above the majority of certified specimens, with roughly only 13% of the population across NGC and PCGS combined ranking finer. Omitting all but the most insignificant evidence of contact, the fields retain a great satiny originality, just the most minor mottling of tone observable beneath thick flashes of cartwheel luster. Although slightly more common than its Large Characters counterpart, the present coin nevertheless occurs only infrequently at auction and is one of the finest we have handled in recent years, the last that we presented, an AU58, bringing $60,000 in December 2020.
