Description

Straits Settlements Government of the Straits Settlements 5 Dollars 1.1.1933 Pick 17as KNB21 Specimen PMG Very Fine 25. This rare 1933 dated note is quite unusual, and the cataloger of this lot assumes a story that goes like this. About 20 years after issue, a small number of Straits Settlements notes were still in service, most likely traded between small purveyors outside the modern banking system. Eventually, this note was denied somewhere, and its owner asked for an exchange at a banking institution. Although this note's issuing agency was defunct, it was exchanged anyway, and cancellations were applied. First generation fiber tip marker ink was used to "Hand Cancel" the serial numbers, and a purple stamp was applied to the back, along with a perforated cancellation. There is a PVC haze, and rounded corners are mentioned for accuracy. A curious "Specimen", this piece seems to be a cancelled note reluctantly plucked from public circulation long after the heyday of this issue.
