Description

P. Satrienus (77 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.76 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 2/5, brushed. Rome. Helmeted head of young Mars right; XXXI behind / ROMA / P•SATRIE/NVS, she-wolf prowling left, right forepaw raised. Crawford 388/1b. Sydenham 781a. Satriena 1. Per Crawford, the moneyer is a P. Satrienus, otherwise unknown, but may be a freedwoman. The wolf on the reverse has no connection to the she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus, but was perhaps adopted as a symbol for Rome after the defeat of the rebel Italians to equated Rome to a predatory wolf. If this is correct, this issue may be perhaps anti-Italian in nature.
