Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (864-877) MS63 NGC, Rouen mint, Class 2, Rob-1431, MEC I-894, MG-878 var., Dep-878 (legends mis-transcribed). 20mm. 1.57gm. +CRΛTIΛ RI REX, retrograde Carolus monogram / +ROTVMΛCVS CIVII, cross pattee. A somewhat peculiar and aesthetically enviable denier, featuring the characteristic Carolus monogram struck in retrograde, a not unusual feature for this mint. Rarely offered at this grade level, and likely amongst the finest. Sold with old collector's envelope. Ex. Morris Collection
