Description

THRACE. Odessus. Ca. late 3rd century BC. AV stater (21mm, 8.41 gm, 11h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 3/5. Posthumous issue in the name and types of Lysimachus, ca. 225-200 BC. Diademed head of deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena seated left, Nike crowning royal name in right hand, resting left arm on grounded shield decorated with gorgoneion head boss, transverse spear beyond; ΟΔ H monogram below right arm, K•HP (HP as a monogram) in exergue. AMNG I 2119 type (KOI in exergue). Müller 237 type (same). Sharply struck from dies of pleasing style, with significant residual luster. A nice and rare example from this small transitional series. Well struck on large flan, and choice for the type. Small flan flaw near edge as seen in photos. Ex Heritage Auctions, 3071 NYINC (7 January 2019), lot 33066
