Ferdinand & Isabella (1474-1504) gold 2 Excelentes ND (from 1497)-S MS65 S NGC, Seville mint, Cal-746 (prev. Cal-74), Cay-2927, ORC-197. 7.02gm. :X: FERnAnDuS: ET: ELISΛBET: DE, crowned facing busts of Ferdinand and Isabella, S below, pellet between, cross above / • SVB: VmBRA: ALARVm: T •, crowned royal shield over nimbate eagle. Simply astonishing by all metrics, not only for its technical preservation, but within the series more widely. To date, out of 395 Double Excelentes seen by NGC, the present coin ranks as the sole finest across all mints and subtypes, and is the only example to have been awarded a star for exceptional eye appeal in any grade. Crisp and clear in nearly all of its facets, it is hardly an exaggeration to call this piece one of the finest products of the Seville mint under Ferdinand and Isabella's joint monarchy, and is of superbly fine die style.
