Theophilus (AD 829-842) with Constantine. AV solidus (22mm, 4.43 gm, 5h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Constantinople, AD 830-831. * ΘЄOFI-LOS bASIL', bust of Theophilus facing, with short beard, wearing crown and chlamys pinned at right shoulder, patriarchal cross in right hand, acacia in left / + COnStAnt' dЄSPOtI' X, bust of Constantine facing, beardless, wearing crown and loros, globus surmounted by patriarchal cross in right hand, cruciform scepter in left. Sear 1654 var. (Λ instead of X in legend). DOC 2 var. (same). Extremely rare - only two examples in sales archives. Exceptionally well struck on gleaming flan.
