Description

Pedro II 1200 Reis 1839 AU Details (Obverse Tooled) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM454, LMB-555, Bentes-577.04. A behemoth of the entire Cruzado series, second in rarity only to the famed 1844 100 Reis, and boasting a miniscule mintage of 186 pieces. A bold strike across the russet-tinged battleship-gray surfaces highlight the tulip wreath, imbued with scant iridescence that shimmers across the notable circular tooling just below the denomination. With an estimated dozen or so extant, this issue is by far one of the most sought-after and difficult to acquire in the entirety of Brazilian numismatics. NGC has seen just four of these specimens, the current example the second finest, with one sitting atop the census at a lofty MS61. The last appearance of this issue to come to market at Heritage was in April of 2010 during the Paulistana Collection sale, where a VF35 realized $25,300, inclusive of buyer's premium. We expect this example to garner just as much interest, if not more, from collectors of the short-lived Cruzado series.
