Description

Spain Banco de Espana 100 Pesetas 11.3.1938 Pick 90sp Specimen Proof PMG Choice Very Fine 35. The Iberian Dama de Elche and a Phoenician ship are portrayed on the front of this iconic design. Thomas de la Rue records indicate that 20 million banknotes were prepared, although none were issued. Interestingly, the three notes of the 1938 series all feature the city of issue as Barcelona, as Madrid fell to the Nationalist movement. In 1939, Barcelona fell as well, and these notes were not issued. Only prototypes, such as Specimen and Proofs, and a few unsigned remainders remain. All design elements are on full display on both sides of this stunning note. The margins are rough and uneven, but thankfully it does not enter the body of the design. A handsome prototype, lacking serial numbers and signatures, and extremely desirable. Edge damage is mentioned by the third party grading company.
