Blacksmith copper "Ship" 1/2 Penny Token 1818 VF/XF, BL-Unl., Wood-Unl. 28mm. 5.94gm. Edge reeded right. Reverse rotated 90 degrees. The obverse depicts what seems to be a steam ship, HALF PENNY above, 1818 below; there appears to be some more text to the right of the ship, which, though softly struck, looks to begin with a T and end with an N / Continuous wreath of berries within crudely crenulated outer border. By all indications an entirely unique and seemingly unpublished blacksmith type that stands out for its singular style and imagery. Though Mr. Partrick's envelope indicates that he purchased this piece from Warren Baker, it is interesting to note that no example appeared in Bowers & Merena's 1987 Sale of his collection. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance. Purchased from Warren Baker on June 21, 1996; Jeffrey Hoare Auction (Year Unknown, Lot 1230); W.W.C. Wilson Collection (Wayte Raymond November 1925, Lot 644)
