Description

Henry VIII (1509-1547) Testoon ND (1544-1547) AU53 NGC, Southwark mint, S mm, Third Coinage, S-2367, N-1842 (R). 7.73gm. One of the most beloved silver types from Henry's reign for its prominent--and by historical indications, quite accurate--portrait of Henry VIII, which can easily be termed the piece's namesake ('testoon' quite literally meaning 'head piece'). Though a coin which often does not permit full appreciation of its artistry due to heavy wear and shallow striking, this specimen preserves almost the entirety of the king's bust intact and not at all blurred by a minor die shift. While few of these pieces have entered into the certified population, the fact that the next finest of any type at NGC is a VF is quite telling, and indicates the offering as a clear target for condition-minded collectors.
