Description

Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) Penny ND (1059-1062) MS66 NGC, Wilton mint, Haerred as moneyer, Hammer Cross type, S-1182, N-828, SCBI XLV-Unl., cf. EMC-1024.0725-0726. 1.28gm. +EΛǷΛRD | RD RE, crowned bust of Edward right, scepter held before / +HERRD: (tooth on H) ON ǷILTEN (group of 3 pellets). An ideal constellation of rarity and condition, pairing an already quite rare mint for the monarch with absolutely astonishing technical preservation. Only the second Wilton-minted penny of Edward of any type that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent years, the features on this coin are incredible, the flan perfect and laden with die polish, creating an impressive canvass for the well-cut designs of expert style. While Edward's coinage occasionally becomes available in lower Mint State grades, to say that one at this peak grade level is rare would be an understatement.
