Description

Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1770 PN-J AU53 NGC, Popayan mint, KM38.2, Fr-24. Featuring light wear as a result of a brief period in circulation, this charming, lightly toned example was evidently struck on fairly fresh dies, showcasing a bold strike and a lack of the deep die crack that sometimes appears on the forehead of the portrait. Despite being in the name of Charles III, the bust on the obverse is actually that of his brother and predecessor, Ferdinand VI, and would continue on this type until 1772, a full 13 years after the latter's death.
