Description

SICILY. Naxos. Ca. 530-500 BC. AR drachm (23mm, 5.12 gm, 7h). NGC (photo-certificate) Choice XF 4/5 - 3/5, Fine Style, edge chips. Bearded head of Dionysius left, wreathed with ivy; dotted border / NAXION (both Ns retrograde), grape bunch on vine flanked by two leaves. Cahn 2. Extremely rare and one of the finest extant of the type. From the Penn Collection. Ex Triton II (1 December 1998), lot 199 Of the 56 archaic drachms cataloged by Cahn, only four are of this first issue type. Naxos was the oldest Greek settlement in Sicily and likely the first to mint coins.
