Description

Canada Bank of Canada $20 1954 "Devil's Face" Pick 70s BC-33PP "Progressive Proof" PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Offered here is a totally unusual and very rare Progressive Proof, printed on molted cardstock. This truly early prototype for the 1954 series has a stamped date of 1953 on the back, which predates the issue of this Queen Elizabeth II series. Infamously dubbed the "Devil's Face" note, these earliest 1954 notes are seen with a peculiar design in Queen Elizabeth II's hair, which to some, resembled the devil. Funny enough, it was during this Progressive Proof stage that such an anomaly could have been noticed and corrected, but in this case, it was not. A variety of notations are seen on both sides of this face Proof, as well as two hole punched cancellations. Although this Proof lacks signatures, it can be assumed that the signatures of Coyne and Towers would be applied to the next stage, as they were the earliest signatures available for the type. Rare and most interesting.
